Why a Gym Membership Helps You Achieve Fitness Goals Faster

There’s something the fitness equipment commercials never tell you: that treadmill, elliptical trainer, or exercise bike doubles as an excellent clothes rack. Sound familiar? For a lot of people, working out at home just doesn’t work because there are too many distractions: laundry, dirty dishes, work, and the temptation to binge-watch your favorite shows can keep you from working out.

“I’ll workout later,” you promise yourself. But it just doesn’t happen if you have to rearrange the furniture just to workout, you can’t quite see what your workout app is telling you to do next, or you can’t seem to get a kid-free moment for 30 minutes on the treadmill.

If you’ve struggled with working out at home on a regular schedule, you’re not alone. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up on your health and fitness goals. Join a gym, and you’ll eliminate the distractions that get in the way of working out at home. And you’ll achieve your fitness goals faster. Check out these six reasons a gym membership can help.

1. Access to Equipment

Forget about tossing all the clothes on the bed to get to the treadmill and don’t bother moving the furniture around just to workout. Just hop in the car and drive to the gym. You’ll have easy access to high-tech treadmills, cycles, and elliptical trainers. Hit the weight room and workout with free weights, machines or both or schedule a fitness class and follow along to get your workout in for the day.

At a great gym, you’ll also have access to the newest trends and functional training equipment, like TRX, battle ropes, and kettlebells–you can try something new every day and never get bored with your workout. You’ll be a lot more likely to tip the scale in the right direction, work out regularly, and get the results you want.

2. Accountability

Sometimes you need to raise the stakes to get motivated about working out. That just doesn’t happen when you’ve got a treadmill at home you scored for free from a friend who wasn’t using it. Join a gym, pay the monthly membership fee, and put your hard-earned money on the line. You’ll be more accountable to yourself to get your money’s worth.

Being part of a gym also increases accountability in other ways. You’ll make friends with other gym members, instructors, staff, and personal trainers who can hold you accountable and help you stay on track to reach your goals.

3. Motivation

Get to the gym and you’ll see people at every fitness level doing their best to get in shape and stay in shape. It’s motivating to be in an environment like that. Get to know people there, and you’ll learn about their hard-earned efforts to lose weight, build muscle, train for a marathon, or achieve some other fitness goal. When you know it can be done, when you know hard work, smart training, and good nutrition pays off, you’ll have more motivation to work on your own goals.

4. Help from Fitness Professionals

A barrier to exercise for a lot of people is not knowing where to start. And if you’ve ever devised your own training plan, but didn’t get the results you wanted, you know that can be incredibly frustrating. Joining a gym gives you access to professionals like certified personal trainers, group fitness instructors, and nutrition experts who can develop a training plan that works.

5. Social Engagement

Working out at home can be an incredibly lonely endeavor. When you join the right gym, you’ll find like-minded people with similar goals and interests as you. Instead of just slogging through a workout, getting to the gym will also give you a chance to meet new people, make friends, and be part of a community that values health and fitness.

6. Convenience

There’s a reason many people don’t get the results they want when they workout at home: there never seems to be a convenient time or place to workout, so they skip a workout, then another, and another. Been there, done that? Getting to the gym eliminates all those distractions at home and makes it a lot more convenient to work out.

If you have kids, find a gym with on-site daycare or fitness classes for kids. If your schedule is a little crazy, look for a gym with hours that match up with times you’re free to workout. If you want a gym that has a little something for everyone, look for a gym that has family-friendly options, classes, and membership packages. And make sure the gym is close to home or work. When going to the gym is convenient, you’ll be a lot more likely to workout, make progress, and stick with it.

Ready to work out but not sure where to start? Get to the gym, ask our staff for help, and you’ll be pointed in the right direction.
